Evaluation
When I initially pitched my idea, I was
intending to create an opening sequence, two posters, a podcast and a website.
This idea ended up being changed, as this amount of production was very
ambitious and the final production of each piece would’ve been worse quality
due to the time frame. Near the end of the first month of the project I was
advised to create a piece that will be more suitable with the time frame we was
given, so I decided to choose a teaser trailer that preferably lasted for
thirty to forty five seconds. This piece was a lot more achievable and allowed
to work on other media pieces with a larger time frame, as then I didn’t have
to devote my time to the moving image piece. It shows me that in future
projects that I create, I should give myself more achievable goals by setting
out more detailed schedules and plans to see if I can reach a deadline. I
created this trailer to add to this scheme of a new movie that I had created in
a sense. This movie ‘Riches’ is for me to base my podcast talk about as well as
the website and posters. It was better in my eyes to create a film concept
rather than using a pre-existing franchise that would already have posters and
websites, as it doesn’t give my piece as much uniqueness.
My shoots for my trailer were mostly
successful. During the rough edit of my trailer I was given feedback how during
a shot on the bus the camera angle wasn’t very relevant for the purpose of my
trailer. Using an oblique angle created this feeling of delusion or made the
film see incorrectly shot. To correct this I planned another shoot on the
public bus. This time I adjusted my shot type and angle to make it more
appropriate. I took multiple shots and finally captured the most effective for
my teaser trailer. I also added some more shoots regarding the scene with my
actor rapping in the ‘studio’. I thought that the final shot lasted to long to
just be a singular shot so I decided to get a close-up which added this more
personal feeling as we are getting in depth with his recording. More
issues that arose during the editing process were finding the correct font to
use for the transitioned graphics. During the decision process of the font I
was given information about ‘House Styles’. This made me think that the best
font and colouring to use was that of the posters title font. If I am keeping
the same tone and theme throughout then this is the most suitable font being
Century Gothic. House styles was very significant in the creation in my pieces
of media that related directly to this film concept as if each piece holds a
different atmosphere then it would feel like they don’t serve the intended
purpose and don’t hold this scheme connection.
To gain knowledge on certain house styles
that related to my genre and how they act with conventions of this genre meant
that I had to look deep into other film maker work and take inspiration from
them. I took a lot of inspiration from the ‘8 Mile’ poster due to its palette
of colours and how it contrasted the font and image This was relevant for my
podcasts, website and posters as if the production isn’t relevant to the genre
then it holds no purpose. I believe that my production is very replicative of
the genre that I wanted to promote and my podcast is able to act like a long
running podcast due to the flow between character dialogue and the use of
interviews. The issues that arose when creating the podcast was the audio only
recorded in the left channel. Fortunately, as I have been becoming more
familiar with Adobe premiere pro over all units I was able to fill the right
channel with the left channel audio. This problem was now corrected. When
representing my podcast on my website I had to upload it onto Sound Cloud as it
allowed me to give this professional standard of platform to be casted on, also
Wix.com allows a Sound Cloud add on so it fits the website very well.
My website was altered after I looked at
the Website for promoting ‘Straight Outta Compton’ as this website didn’t hold
an overflowing amount of information however, there is enough to give a clear
image of what the film is about and all the media that they have posted is on
this website. The realisation that my website doesn’t have to be compiled with
too much information meant that I had to begin changing it and create a layout
that meant it would flow more efficiently with less writing and pages. This
obstacle was hard to pass over as it meant redesigning my website. In the end
this was resolved as I persisted with changing its functionality and was able
to create a minimalistic website that holds my media and presents it in a more
personalised way.
My idea to create a website to hold each
media piece felt like it added to this scheme of promoting a movie and I
believe it worked due to it being mainly inspired from the ‘straight outta
Compton’ website, considering the movie was a large success.
Over each unit, I feel like my confidence
in each area has increased significantly. My ability to use new programs such
as Adobe Audition, Adobe Photoshop etc. has allowed me to create better quality
pieces. My production of graphics such as the posters and title areas in the
trailer could be developed further as I was more comfortable with creating drop
shadows, outer glows, font styles and more.
In terms of representing my planning, research
and idea into production was very successful. My research into trailers wasn’t
as successful as it could’ve been due to my idea change from an opening
sequence to a trailer. I applied what I had learnt from the opening sequence to
my trailer and used the conventions I learnt into my trailer. From this
experience I believe that in the future I should develop my research into what
my idea entails after a possible significant change in idea. This occurred
again later in the process however in this case I documented it and began
looking into posters that hold credit blocks and multiple images in one poster.
This allowed me to produce a better poster, as I was aware of how to place my
credit block text and what font this was. By conducting more research into
pieces of media I am creating it gives me more knowledge in the future and
allows me to be more comfortable with later projects as I will be aware how to
create things I wasn’t aware of before.
With keeping to my original time scale for the whole project I feel like I was very successful in keeping to the rate of production for this production. It allowed me to complete all the work by the designated time. In the future I believe the best option will be to create more in depth time scales that label the exact shoots the description of them. This would allow me to book camera equipment in advance and allow me to have all requirements for shoots. This is level of shoot planning could've been improved too allow for the maximum efficiency in terms of editing shoots and created rough edits and gain more amounts of feedback. Feedback wasn't strongly used in my project. I believe if i created a poll/questionnaire or gained primary research then my project would have been able to be improved on more. The reason I believe I didn't conduct any primary research as during the process I felt like there was no possible area in the creation of it that could be assisted by a decision from peers as there wasn't large decisions to be made. The secondary research into my project provided enough knowledge on these conventions and codes of each media piece. In the future, I am going to conduct primary research as I will be able to gain modern opinions instead of possible old data.
To track my progress throughout the project I often made targets that gave me a certain amount of work to do in a suitable period of time. These targets were very useful as I was able to give myself a goal in a time period instead of bouncing between different project pieces and be less efficient when working. The idea of setting targets and giving myself a goal to work towards in a session works very well with me so in future projects I will create more targets. combining these targets with my time scale/plan will mean my work will stay on track. I wish that I had continued to create targets, but it became hard to create targets for physical work such as recording. It was hard to measure and place a time frame onto. In future projects I will combine the planning documents for shoots with my targets to form appropriate targets that can be completed and reflected on.

From this process of developing and creating
my Final Major Project has given me a lot practice and I know that if I act on
what I did wrong and constantly use these techniques then I will only improve.
Along the way, I will come across obstacles in the process but I feel like
these units have equipped me with the best ways to resolve them.
At the moment this isn't much of an evaluation, and more of a list of things to discuss. Ensure that you have written a comprehensive evaluation and reflection of the project. Consider returning to your proposal and review your product against the aims that you set yourself. Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve? What changed along the way and what did you gain from the whole experience?
